$45 per 45min individual lesson Free introductory lesson 027 413 6299 My studio is in Mairehau, Christchurch. MY APPROACH My approach is to focus where you are at, and go from there. One step at a time in the right sequence. Being student based, I do my best to ensure you learn the material that most appeals to you, while at the same time encouraging you to appreciate and produce excellence. But the most important part of my teaching and performing ethos for me is that it must be fun, and for me music should be able to provide that wonderful free feeling of flow and an immediate and ineffable emotional expression and communication with both my fellow performers and audience. To achieve a flowing performance, I like to avoid repeating errors while practising, so whatever is performed should mostly be within easy reach of the skills possessed by the performer. It is no fun and little is achieved through attempting things beyond your present skills. I am only interested in serious students with some aptitude and talent, who can dedicate a minimum of 10mins to their practice at least 5 days a week. TEACHING EXPERTISE Every teacher has differing teaching expertise and abilities. The areas where I have done best as a performer are: classical guitar and Latin guitar solos and ensemble work. As a teacher it is different: the best of my many students seem to have done really well as performing singer/guitarists who write original songs using interesting chords and musical ideas. For a number of years I taught guitar full time; first in the Nelson area as an itinerant school tutor followed by my Parnell Guitar Academy of private students in Auckland where I taught full time for several years whilst performing part time. MY PERFORMING EXPERIENCE From 1990 to 2015, I focused exclusively on being a full time professional concert guitarist. For a number of years in the 1980s and 1990s I toured here and overseas as a concert classical guitarist full time. Besides my public concerts, I have given over 2,500 educational school concerts. Currently I perform with my band ART GHETTO and still give public concerts all over New Zealand. The CD GUITAR STORIES features original classical guitar major works that have been featured on concert FM. AMIGOS is an original Latin CD. The knowledge I impart is based on my decades as a full-time concert guitarist composer and singer. I have performed with classical guitarists, violinists (including Robin Perks from the NZSO) and flutists. I have been a guitarist and singer of various flamenco troupes (DESDE SEVILLA in Wellington FIESTA dancers in AK, etc) I formed a successful big salsa Latin band AMIGOS in Christchurch I have written rock songs and sung and played electric guitar in various rock groups (most notably new wave ELECTROBEAT in Auckland, HIGHWAY in Nelson, and STRUDLE in Auckland – we had various top residencies)… Perhaps my most useful experiences as a professional performer were as a busker in New Zealand, because few buskers earn enough money to live off their earnings. You must develop a lot of skill to get the attention and appreciation of people passing by, who may not have expected to see you there. when I busked full time and eventually very successfully in Rome, |
