LATIN PACIFIC educational music concerts 2021 now booking.
The most popular and the most experienced school performer in the history of New Zealand (over 2,510 concerts performed in schools).
Since the first ADVENTURES WITH A GUITAR concerts that took the kids on a journey through time and space, Jonathon Harper has gone on to double the previous record for school musical concerts set by percussionist Gary Brain (1,000).
Magician Norman Tate must have done many, many more school concerts....around 50,000 according to the book Funny As. (I assume his number is not magical!...There are about 190 school days in a year in NZ schools, so I think that averages just over 5 concerts a school day for 50 years. Maybe he performed for 70 years?)
This is the most popular school concert program of all time having performed 2,510 concerts mostly in NZ, but also in England, Australia and Italy. Harper has performed speaking to his audiences only in Maori, Spanish and Italian (besides English1)
Current concert program for Primary and Intermediate Schools
The new show for 2018 for Primary and Intermediate Schools is the KIWI MUSIC HISTORY show and focuses on some NZ music that reflects some aspects of our cultural heritage, mostly our historical bicultural roots. So it includes Maori instruments and historical folk songs, finishing with some contemporary NZ pop music. There is a short section that briefly samples some of the growing cultural diversity in NZ.
Schools like the small band who are coached for about three quarters of an hour beforehand to perform four songs in the show with Jonathon. They play simple percussion (including a pacific Island slit log drum or Patu), drain pipe basses and a keyboard. Other instruments, dancers and singers can be added to the core six. The whole audience dance move and respond enthusiastically throughout the show, so it becomes something we all do together.
The new program retains and develop the best ideas from previous presentations and suggestions received from school staff, children and the many professionals consulted (many in Colleges of Education) over this record 2,510 school concerts here and overseas. The new program features:
· Audience participation with movement, dance, and playing instruments
· Covering some of the social studies and music syllabi
· Preparing selected children to perform with me in the show
· Multi instrumentalist: guitar, flutes, mandolin, percussion, pacific log drum
Secondary Schools
I have a new show for 2018 that is mostly original, but like the previous Latin Pacific one shows how Latin and Polynesian influences can be blended to create a unique NZ sound.
